EnsembleWriter Pricing

EnsembleWriter has three ceilings rather than two plans. You can write without an account at all, a free account gives you more room, and Pro removes the page limit and unlocks automated shot lists. Only the last one costs anything.

Without an Account

You do not need an account to use EnsembleWriter. Open the editor and start typing: the full formatting engine, PDF and Fountain export, read-aloud, and share links all work signed out, and your work is saved in your browser between sessions.

Writing without an account is capped at 10 pages per screenplay. That covers a short film, a TV cold open, or the opening of a feature. Nothing expires, and the only other limit is that a share link shows its reader the first five pages until the owner is on Pro.

Because the work lives in your browser rather than on our servers, clearing your browser data deletes it. Making a free account is what moves it somewhere safer.

Free Tier

A free account costs nothing and lifts the page limit. It includes:

  • Unlimited screenplays
  • Up to 12 pages per screenplay, more than you get signed out
  • Cloud sync across devices
  • Sharing via read-only link
  • Real-time collaboration with invited collaborators
  • Auto-formatting with industry-standard screenplay layout
  • PDF and Fountain export

Drafts you started signed out move into the account when you create one, so nothing is lost by writing first and signing up later.

Accounts created before the limit changed in September 2026 keep the 20-page free limit they signed up under. Nothing changed for them, and nothing will. Your account page shows the limit that applies to you.

A standard screenplay page is 55 lines, roughly one minute of screen time. Ten pages is a short film or a cold open; twelve covers most pilot first acts. A finished feature runs 90 to 110, which is where Pro comes in.

Pro Plan

Pro costs $10.00 per month and unlocks everything in the free tier plus:

  • Unlimited pages per screenplay
  • Automated shot lists: per-scene shot breakdowns, exportable to PDF or CSV
  • Beta features before they are generally released

There are no annual contracts or commitments. You are billed monthly and can cancel at any time.

How to Upgrade

There are two ways to upgrade to Pro:

  • Click Upgrade in the toolbar at the top of the editor.
  • When you hit the page limit on your current tier, a modal appears with an upgrade option.

Either path takes you to a Stripe checkout page where you enter your payment details. Once payment is confirmed, Pro features activate immediately.

EnsembleWriter uses Stripe for payment processing. Your credit card information is handled entirely by Stripe and never touches EnsembleWriter's servers.

Managing Your Subscription

You can cancel your Pro subscription at any time from your account settings. When you cancel:

  • You keep Pro features until the end of your current billing period.
  • After that, your account reverts to the free tier.
  • Your scripts are never deleted. They remain in your account.
  • Scripts past your free page limit stay fully readable, editable and exportable, but you cannot add pages beyond it. Trim below the limit or resubscribe to keep growing them.

If you resubscribe later, all your scripts and their full content are restored immediately.
