Gittes grabs Evelyn by the arms. She struggles but he holds her.
GITTES
I want the truth.
EVELYN
She's my sister —
Gittes slaps her again.
EVELYN
(continuing)
My sister... my daughter...
He slaps her again.
EVELYN
(sobbing)
She's my sister AND my daughter.
Gittes stops. He stares at her. The words hang in the air between them. He lets go of her arms.
GITTES
(quietly)
What?
EVELYN
My father and I — understand? Or is it too tough for you?
